The Oregon Democratic Club Scholarship, presented yearly, will be awarded to the most deserving applicant who has demonstrated school and community commitment, who recognizes the importance of the democratic process, and who plans to continue his or her education or job training after graduating from high school.

PURPOSE: This scholarship shall be awarded to defray the cost of tuition, room and board, equipment or tools, and books, while attending a post-secondary institution. The scholarship may be used for no other purpose.

ELIGIBILITY: Any graduating senior residing in the Oregon School District is eligible to apply during the year in which he or she will graduate. Children and grandchildren of members of the Scholarship Selection Committee are not eligible to receive this award. **

**Children and grandchildren of members shall include natural, adopted, or those under full custodial of guardian rights.

AMOUNT: One scholarship of $500 shall be awarded. This scholarship is an outright gift.

ANNOUNCING THE AWARD: The award shall be determined and announced on or about the time of high school graduation, with the winner and family invited to our club meeting in June. We will be announcing the winner in the Suburban/Metro Press with the winning essay published.

CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE WINNER:

 

A. Original, personal essay (750 words max) that specifically addresses this question (60%) NEW QUESTION: As a new voter what are some issues you feel are important to you and your peers. What do you see is the importance of your vote at the federal state and local levels. How would you use your voice to encourage your peers’ participation in the voting and democratic process.

 

B. Character and personal involvement in school/ community (20%) The applicant’s overall character, integrity, and honesty will be considered from the letters of recommendation, along with assessments from high school staff and community members well-acquainted with the applicant, and from the submitted lists of school/community activities and work experiences.

C. Scholarship (20%) Consideration shall be given to grade point average, class rank, and course preparation for college and/or trade school which may not be reflected in academic achievement.

Based upon the above criteria and possible personal interview, the recipient from eligible applicants shall be chosen by the Scholarship Committee Chairperson and such committee members as designated by the Oregon Democratic Club. The decision of the committee will be final.

 

Time Schedule: Applications are available now. All applications must be completed and returned by Wednesday, April 17th, 2024. The selection process will be made in April with a presentation on or near graduation 2024, after the selection.
